Wow. This post is several months old already, but I stumbled across it because it is your most emailed post and the title caught my eye...
Jeff, I remember you preaching on Hebrews 12 very well. I had started to visit KCBT and was not a believer yet. This was the first sermon that went straight to my heart and made me realize that I have not been to the point yet to start the race of my life (with God) and what was holding me back. Conviction was all over me and not too long after that I got saved.

I have known Chung as a mentor, counselor, ministry leader, friend, ... an amazing model to follow because of his love for the Lord and for people. I learned so much from him while being part of the people ministry at KCBT. I miss his smiles, his hugs, his love and his counsel. You are right in saying that he will never be replaced and he is greatly missed.

I have known of his passing and had my own time of mourning. But this is so neat to read... even before I have known Chung personally, he was in a way "part" of that sermon that had touched my heart in getting me to the point of salvation. Jeff, you had that sermon split in those four major points (roughly: laying aside the weight for the start, starting and focusing, finding your pace, looking beyond the cross) and many times I have been quoting these in telling my testimony or in other situations where it fit.

Thanks for posing this.

I just found out today (July 9) about Chung's passing. We visited KCBT on the 15th of June while we were in the Kansas City area and I got to spend some time talking with my old friend! He was in great spirits and looked like he could go another 50 years! He casually mentioned that he had cancer but acted as if it were "no problem at all"! He will be greatly missed. He was always a tremendous encouragement to my wife Cheryl and I and a tremendous testimony and encouragement to all of those that knew him. I will certainly miss his warm smile and friendly hand shake that he always had for everyone, not to mention those big hugs he always gave us as well! May all of us that knew him continue the course that he so faithfully followed and continue the work that he has left behind.

Thanks to Pastor Jeff Adams, Pastor Jay Grimwood, and the wonderful staff at KCBT. You took my little bro in and let him work his way. Pastor Jay led the funeral celebrations for Chung, and Jay you sure did a great job. I see greatness in you and your future. Primarily, you are humble and know how to highlight others. Our family had a sort of reunion in your celebration activities, and as we saw our larger family during a few days in KC. We come from Lebanon, some town near Springfield, Upland, California and San Diego California, and the Pentagon, Washington DC., plus several places around KC. We rejoiced with you to celebrate Chung finishing the course first as he did in all races. I grew up with Chung, and was always waiting on him to leave some gathering as he kept talking to people about Jesus. We loved to compete in many ways, but above all else, Jesus Christ is first for us. Now, with grandchildren, we enjoy seeing our sons and daughters bringing grandchildren up to love Jesus. As one grandson said when he was four and told of another grandson accepting Jesus into his heart "but Dad, doesn't everyone have Jesus in his heart?" Our family doesn't know any different. Praise God for Chung and the way he has shown everyone he met. May God send another like Chung to help you serve Christ at KCBT. However, from what I have seen, you already have men ready to lead beginning with Pastor Jay. Please help Chung's best friend John whom you met. He should have a place of service. He is one terrific guy, that Chung called Arnold after our California Governor. Also, my nephew Mike Heidbrink who attended, but may need a church home. Thanks too pastor, for sharing Hebrews 12.

It took a while for this to sink in after I read it this morning. Not Chung's death, I knew he had passed on, but his words. And then, I began to cry.

"The key here is to run relaxed...run with patience."

Then it hit me, a lack of patience manifests itself as stress. This is so where I have been running. My job, stress. Getting my degree, stress. Waiting to get to the field, stress. I am so incredibly stressed, I know I'm not running my best race.

Wait, my best race? It is not mine it is God's. He laid out the course. He set Cindy and I on this path. I just need to look to the author and finisher of my faith and "run with patience". I cannot make things go faster. Indeed, if I try, I just make them go slower.

I think I'll take the good Dr. Chung's prescription: Relax your jaw, your neck, your hands and just run.

Thank you Jeff for sharing these words and thanks Chung for writing them.

I met Chung during a class I attended (Way of the Master). His love for people and the Lord was obvious and demonstrated in his actions. I am thankful that I had an opportunity to cross paths with him.

It was a bittersweet day when I heard news of his passing. I've known Chung my whole life well since I was in the 5th grade. We lived about a mile down the street from the "Chung house". Chung invited me to assist him with coaching his daughter's softball team. A couple of years later I picked up a new hobby... jogging. I would pass his house daily and always thought of Chung as... just a great man. We connected once again at KCBT when I was invited to play softball. I always enjoyed watching him play softball and thinking I would like to be playing softball at his age and suddenly realize…I’m NOT Chung! He ran a great race and finished strong. Thanks for the example.

Chung was my first brush with a fellow believer after I was saved in 1993. I was amazed as a 19 year old that a man would be so dedicated to helping me in the race by making a visit to my house. He was a true example of what I'd always hoped to be as a follower of Christ...dedicated, genuine and a lover of the souls of people.

Thanks for putting into words Jeff what I'm sure many people feel for Chung Anderson.

I met Chung in the Way of the Master class that he helped teach. He was just as you described, honestly interested and caring about everyone he met. He was a great example of showing sincere love for your neighbor.
