Hope for the Hurting

August 5, 2008

A verse that seems to be included in any basic scripture memory program is Jeremiah 33:3. Can you say it from memory?

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Jeremiah 33:3

Though certainly a wonderful promise, few are aware of the context. The prophet Jeremiah is in prision for the crime of truthfully and completely delivering God’s message to his people. Outside, the nation is crumbling all around. Babylonian troops are poised to attack and bring Jerusalem down to the ground. This is enough to make the eternal optimist suicidal. In the context God is inviting Jeremiah to call out to him so that he can give him hope.

As I looked again at these words this morning, I was struck by verse 6, not verse 3. In the midst of a time of great despair, God wants to assure Jeremiah that there is hope. Can you imagine that? God is seeking out Jeremiah in one of the lowest moments of his life. God invites Jeremiah to call unto him. Then, he dishes out a full portion of hope.

Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. Jeremiah 33:6

Speaking of a rebellious nation on the verge of collapse, God holds out hope of healing, health and the abundance of peace and truth!

Do you ever feel like your world is crumbling around your ears? Do you wonder where God is? Could it be that rather than crying out to him, you are crying out to everyone else from pastors, friends, counselors and therapists? Everyone except God? Could it be that you are the one in need of healing or hope? God promises you the abundance of peace of truth that can enable you to withstand the most difficult of circumstances.
