Day Trippers

September 4, 2009

I heard today that this Labor Day Weekend could be the third largest travel weekend of the decade. Perhaps you have some big plans for a final holiday before Fall and the school year get into full gear. We are just looking foward to spending some down time at home. I’m also looking forward to starting the latest Nehemiah series, Confronting Obstacles, this Sunday.

Today, however, we did something we haven’t had a chance to do for a long time. We took a complete day off just to relax. I honestly can’t remember when the last time was we didn’t use my “day off” to run errands, work, travel, or something else. So, after breakfast we decided to take a day trip to Weston, MO, where we had not been for years.

Weston, Missouri

Weston, Missouri

Off we headed thinking the rain would stop by the time we got there. It didn’t. The rain didn’t stop us, though, from popping our heads into some of the shops. Then, we stumbled into Charlemagne’s Restaurant, owned and operated by a direct descendant of the great king. The menu is a combination of Spanish, German, French, Italian and other European influences suggested by Charlemagne’s empire. It’s a cute little place with good food and reasonable prices. I’d go back.

We next headed across the river toward Atchison, KS thinking the rain would stop by the time we got there. It didn’t. We still had a nice time driving around and looking at some of the wonderful old homes and the campus of St. Benedictine’s College.

OK, I’ve said all this to ask the question, what are your favorite day trips? I know that many of you don’t live in the Kansas City area, but it still might be fun to know your favorite day trips and make the rest of us envious.

Theres a little back roads trip Sharon & I take down 291 to Liberty and on over to Excelsior Springs on H HWY and stop for a BBQ meal at the Wabash BBQ just around the corner from the Elms Hotel. Head out on 10 HWY to 13 HWY and across the new Missouri River bridge to Lexington and take old 224 along the Mighty Mo back to 24 HWY. Take H rd south towards Oak Grove. Catch FF west to Buckner Tarnsey Rd south a short jaunt to Pink Hill Rd west thru Blue Springs, Independence and on towards home in Raytown. It’s a scenic little country run with lot’s of colors in the fall and great views of the river. It only takes a 2-3 of hours. Lot’s of small boutique shops for those that like that kind of thing. It’s best when driven on a motorcycle though!

Thanks for the info, I only told you about it because I didn’t know who else to tell. I’ll e-mail one of them and let them know.

Thanks, Rose. I tried it myself and had the same result. I suspect it is a code problem they can easily fix. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I’m having trouble with the link for one the Nehemiah sermons: Things worth Being. It just will not go to it.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

Sorry, Rose, but I am not a techie. You might want to email Rebe Chambers, rchambers@kcbt.org or Jim Edwards, jedwards@kcbt.org and tell them the problem you are having. They could probably determine if the problem is the link, yoru browser or whatever. I’m not in the office right now, so just drop them a quick email. Hopefully they can fix you right up.

To those of you who have been to J B Hooks, how expensive is it? My husband and I have talked about going, but haven’t yet. We’re afraid it is to expensive for us.

There is a really good Mexican place in Sunrise Beach that we go to every time we are at the Lake, Sunrise Cantina! Best Flan ever.

It’s not cheap. If you are familiar with Plaza III, McCormick’s & Schmidt’s, etc. I’d say it’s in that category. But why guess? Go to http://www.jbhooks.com and check out the menu with prices.

I like a jaunt into the flint hills to Council Grove or Cottonwood Falls.

WOW! Those are names I haven’t heard for a while and those are very interesting little cities. I can remember going to debate and forensics meets in those places and others when I was in high school.

This is totally off subject, but, I just finished listening to your first sermon on Nehemiah, and when you got to the part about abusive men, and them using the Bible to control, it hit home with me, because my ex-husband did exactly that. He did that every chance he got, and, Yes he was a Hippocrite, big time. You may have noticed I said ex-husband, I finally got tired of his abuse and left. We had 3 children together, and when we divorced, I sent the kids to live with him because I thought they would get a better education(He had moved to Oklahoma). Eventually, all 3 kids ended up back here in KC.

By God’s providence, I am now married to wonderful man who is totally different from my ex-husband.(Although my present husband just became a Catholic, which I am NOT happy about). He not abusive in any way, shape, or form. WE have been married for 7 1/2 years now.

Sorry you had to go through that experience, Rose. But, at the very least, it is a constant reminder that there are worse things in life than a husband who just became a Catholic. Blessings to you both!

A favorite day trip is to Osage Beach, MO. Its a very beautiful drive, especially in the fall. There is a wounderful place to eat called J B Hooks. The restaurant is on a bluff that over looks the lake. Check it out at http://www.jbhooks.com

J B Hooks! First class. I’ve eaten there a good number of times and it is always good. One of my favorite lake places. Good taste, Lee!

this is a messge to Mike – regarding Elijay, GA. I just came back from a conference in Cartersville – about an hour SW of Elijay. My cousin lives in Elijay – wish I could get there more.

Regarding daytrips in MO – My favorite thing to do is get on a road (not a highway) and see where it leads. I have ended up in Herman, Lexington, and various point. I try to stay close (within a 90 minutes.) You never know where you will end up, what you will see, and what your car will really hold!

Oh, German! Another great day trip! Been there several times.

If you get the chance to go to Atchison again, you should try to go to Amelia Earheart’s home. It is really nice.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

Drove by, but the next time we’ll have to get out and go in! Thanks!

  • Mike

Our favorite local day trip is to Ellijay, GA in the north GA mountains. The apples, scenary, and food are wonderful!

I love both cities, my husband and I go to Weston often, and my former Spiritual director is in Atchison.(She is a Benedictine nun).

Our favorite day trip is to Lexington, MO, east on Hwy. 24, on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. The main street is much like Weston, but there are many charming antebellulm houses, shops, an historic Romanesque style court house, a military school (If not closed), and a mighty fine restaurant in an historic old building. The Anderson house and estate is worth the trip alone. It was a major producer of hemp, which was baled and taken down hill to the dock. A major Civil War battle was waged there with Confederate Militia holed up in the house for defense, and Yankee troops, camped on a hill, were slaughtered in charges down the hill toward the house. using hemp bales as cover. The final charge was made when the Yankees became blind staggerin “don’t care” drunk. Bullet holes are still in walls and woodwork. We took the Berean Ministry Fellowship there for dinner and a tour.

AHH Atchison. My wonderful hometown. This is one of my favorite day trips. I take it often to visit my grandfather in the nursing home. I can never leave without going down the brick streets gazing at the old beautiful homes. Reminds me of a time of innocence so long ago. So glad you had a great day trip!

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

OOOH! Thanks for reminding me that is your hometown. I love the feel!
