Pizza Dreams

March 16, 2010

OK, after a week-long series about human suffering and several days of nursing a sick wife, I am in need of a bit of levity.  So, humor me.

Since Cheryl has been under the weather and not having much of an appetite, it fell to me last night to fend for myself for dinner. Not having had a bite to eat all day long, I was getting hungry. The cupboard was a little bare and I decided to go in search of one of  my favorite comfort foods – pizza! Since I would be eating alone and would not have a chance to do leftovers the next day, I thought I would try one of the many brands of frozen pizza that are on display in the local super.

I had not had frozen pizza for years.  Now I remember why. It was horrible. The crust was mostly hard. and the pizza itself had a somewhat metallic taste that must have come from the funky little cardboard/foil contraption that the pizza sits on in the microwave. A quick Internet search of reviews pointed me to DiGiorno. So, if that was one of the better ones, then I thank God I didn’t try one of the lesser ones!

In case this ever comes up again, does anyone have any better suggestions? And, while we are talking pizza, what is your favorite take-away pizza (not sit down in a restaurant pizza). My three favorites at this moment are Minsky’s combo from the Main Street location south of The Plaza, Tim’s on 4o Highway and the deep dish Chicago style from Rosati’s on 103rd Street whenever I need to gain a couple of pounds.

  • Janet

Spin pizza in Lee’s Summit is REALLY GOOD.

  • Tim

Any discussion of pizza should start with d’Bronx at 39th and Bell near KU Med Center. One combo slice seems to make all things right for a brief moment. Minksy’s at 50th and Main is also a personal fav, I keep it simple there. Just italian sausage and pepperoni.

If you insist on the do-it-yourself kind, you might try Papa Murphy’s. They build it, you cook it. Much better than frozen.

      Words of profound wisdom. Thanks!

  • Carol

Always go for Tim’s on 40 Highway. That’s our favorite!

  • Kory Kraft

Frozen Pizza Pastor Jeff??? You are one brave soul.

      Never again!

As you noted, frozen pizza should be avoided if at all possible. But IF you found yourself in such a pinch at you had the other night, The Dish out of Liberty makes an acceptable frozen pie. You can find it here: http://www.dishpizza.com/frozen-pizzas.html

If you’re ever up that way, it is beyond worth the stop.

    Estimado Hermano Jeff,

Definitivamente cuando este en Morelia lo voy a llevar a “El lugar” de pizzas artesanales http://delena.com.mx/

      Acepto!

    Jeff,

    Different subject:

I thought you might find this article interesting.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

Yes, very interesting and reflects a great deal of current controversy. Thanks, Christine.

  • Brendan

Gotta do Aljon’s. But I don’t think they deliver to MO.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

That’s just great, Brendon! Next time in Jersey!

  • Shane

Waldo Pizza (in Waldo) would be up there with Minsky’s in my book. They have some of the most unique pizzas around! Square Pizza in downtown Independence isn’t bad either. My favorite though, is Minsky’s on Main Street.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

We have similar tastes in Pizza. Waldo is also on my short list right after the three I mentioned.

  • Ralph

Jeff, My experience with frozen pizza is very much like my experience with McDonalds coffee…it is consistent…consistently bad! Sorry, no recommendations.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

I’m afraid your right, Ralph. Wisdom would dictate no more frozen pizza – or Micky D coffee.

  • Lee

The best pizza in town can be found at Gambino’s in Lee’s Summit. I highly recommend the “Mobster.” Dine in or carry out. Check them out at http://www.gambinospizza.com you’ll be gald you did!

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

OK, Lee. I’ll have to try that. Thanks.

  • Donna Kuck

Melo’s and Skippolini’s Pizza Restaurants in Pleasant Hill and Concord, CA. Unfortunately, Jeff – by the time you get them home, they will be very cold. Melo’s specializes in thin, non-greasy crusts. I love everything I’ve tried.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

Well, I appreciate the recommendation anyway. Maybe if I ever find myself in your part of the world.

  • Brandon

I haven’t had grocery store freezer pizza in a while (can Totino’s even be counted?)–and never a microwaved one. We usually visit Papa Murphy’s if we’re in the mood for pizza but not up for making it ourselves.

And Rosati’s…delish. We used to have one up here until perpetual road construction killed their business. We had their deep dish Chicago style one time and it was amazing.

I also like d’Bronx on 39th and Papa Keno’s in Westport (now closed though).

    Hope that Cheryl continues improving.

And thanks for the series on hurting people. It’s been good to read and think about.

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

Glad you also vote for Rosati’s. Haven’t been there for a while because of the distance, but you’re getting my hungry.

  • Jackie

oh dude! (can I call the Pastor dude?) Anyway, I have to admit to a few DiGiorno emergency pizza moments myself (thin crust only) My current choices for take-out would have to be Spin in Lees Summit (Chipman) or a few blocks down from Main St Minsky’s, D’Bronx on Bell or Crown Center (lunch spot), and old school Minskys’s but I haven’t been there in ages.

I hope Miss Cheryl is better soon, for both your sakes!

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

You’re the second Spin recommendation. I’ll have to check it out. I forgot that it’s so close to Minsky’s on Main. Miss Cheryl seems to be turning the corner. Thanks, Pastor Dude.

  • amber

Not much of a pizza person myself (don’t like red sauce)…But LOVE St.Louis style cheese pizza from Waldo Pizza (hardly any sauce…) Also LOVE LOVE the pear, (yes i said pear) gargonzola pizza from California Pizza Kitchen!!!

    • http://www.kcbt.org Jeff Adams

PEAR??? Well, I’ll have to commit that pear to prayer. But, if you like St. Louis style you might want to check out Immo’s. I know there is one in Westport in the center with the grocery store.
